You know that argument. The one you've had seventeen times.
It starts with a text, a tone, or someone needing an evening alone. And somehow you end up in the same place again.
One person feels ignored. The other feels pressured.
One wants to talk right now. The other suddenly has an urgent relationship with the dishwasher.
In this week's episode of Let's Talk Attachments, I break down what's really happening in the anxious-avoidant cycle, and how to respond differently, whichever side you're on.
In this episode:
- The argument underneath the argument (it's rarely about the text)
- What pursuing looks like when you lean anxious, and why "Whatever, don't worry about it" never works
- What withdrawing looks like when you lean avoidant, and why silence feels like more disconnection
- My own experience on the overwhelmed side of this cycle
- Why reassurance doesn't last, and when space turns into disappearing
- What Would Secure Me Do?™ in the middle of an argument
- How to make room for both of your needs
One thing to try this week:
Think about your most familiar argument. Where does your part of the cycle usually begin? The second message? The defensive explanation? The moment you leave and don't come back?
Choose one small change. Make one direct request. Ask a question before defending. Or say you need a pause, and come back when you said you would.
Catching yourself halfway through the old response and trying again counts.
With love,
Jessica
